What is the Unit About?
Unit Description
Students completing this unit will acquire advanced problem-solving and analytical skills for the ‘diagnosis’ of service delivery blockages, quality and safety issues, and system inefficiencies. The unit draws upon a solid theoretical and empirical basis and introduces students to a range of best practice healthcare redesign models and tools for use within primary, secondary, and tertiary healthcare contexts. This unit is a prerequisite for CAM510 Healthcare Redesign Solutions and Implementation. Students are expected to undertake a small workplace-based, or simulated, healthcare redesign project in their as part of CAM509 and CAM510, with assessments tied to key project milestones. This (work integrated) learning approach provides students with the opportunity to improve patient care using evidence-based strategies while working towards an academic qualification.
Intended Learning Outcomes
As per the Assessment and Results Policy 1.3, your results will reflect your achievement against specified learning outcomes.
On completion of this unit, you will be able to:
1.
Compare healthcare redesign theories, frameworks, and concepts to justify their use in improving a local process.
2.
Select and apply a range of tools and techniques to define, measure and analyse local health service issues and problems.
3.
Analyse and synthesise evidence and information to understand a local problem and how it affects patients, staff and organisation.
4.
Develop and employ strategies for involving collective engagement in healthcare redesign to understand a local process.
5.
Use various methods to communicate evidence, system information and process information relevant to healthcare redesign.

Attendance / engagement expectations
If your unit is offered On campus, it is expected that you will attend all on-campus and onsite learning activities. This is to support your own learning and the development of a learning community within the unit. If you are unable to attend regularly, please discuss the situation with your course coordinator and/or our UConnect support team.

If your unit is offered Online, it is expected you will engage in all those activities as indicated in the Unit Outline, including any self-directed learning.

If you miss a learning activity for a legitimate reason (e.g., illness, carer responsibilities) teaching staff will attempt to provide alternative activities (e.g., make up readings) where it is possible.

All learning activities and assessment tasks are detailed in the Assessment Guide and Study Schedule, which is available via Announcements on the Unit Homepage. It is expected that students engage in the unit as follows:
Engagement tasks
Please complete the first two engagement tasks (Module 1 discussion board post and Quiz 1) as per the Study Schedule
Webinars and drop-in sessions
Webinars are not compulsory but are provided to support student learning. They cover the requirements of assessment tasks or topics relevant to unit content. Webinar recordings and slide packs are posted in MyLO for those unable to attend. In addition to webinars, drop-in sessions are held in the lead up to major assessment task submission dates. Drop-in sessions are an informal opportunity for you to ask questions and seek advice from the teaching team.
Assessment tasks
It is expected that students complete assessment tasks by the due date. If you are unable to do so, please submit a formal extension request to MyLO as early as possible. Please note that there are two cohorts of students in this unit that are assessed differently. Students enrolled through the University of Tasmania’s partnership with the Agency of Clinical Innovation (ACI) at NSW Health must complete Assessment Task 1. All other students must complete Assessment Tasks 2, 3, 4 and 5. Please refer to the assessment task descriptions and rubrics when preparing your assignments.

Assessment Task 1: Diagnostics A3 poster, issues log and project documentation (ACI-NSW Cohort only)
Task Description:
This assessment task is to be completed by ACI-NSW Special programs students only and is the sole assessment piece for this cohort. This assessment task fulfills the unit requirements for students undertaking CAM509 in partnership with the Agency for Clinical Innovation at NSW Health. There are three components of this assessment:

Diagnostics poster
The A3 poster’s purpose is to clearly convey the purpose of your project, the findings from your diagnostics phase, and your case for change. There should be clear, logical linkages between your project goal, the evidence and data presented, the identified root causes and key issues, and your case for change. Please use the templates and guidelines provided to complete your A3.

Issues log
The issues log should contain all the issues identified throughout the diagnostics phase. Please include a source (i.e., through which tool or activity they were identified), issue title, issue description and organise them into categories.

Project documentation
You will also need to submit your supporting project documentation including your communication plan, risks and issues register and Gantt chart. The project documentation should demonstrate detailed planning for the diagnostics phase and forward planning for the upcoming solutions phase. Please use the templates provided.

Contributes 100% of Total Mark.

Task Length:
Double A3 poster, issues log: Excel workbook, project documentation: Excel workbook using provided templates.

Assessment Task 3: Project pitch presentation
Task Description:
This assessment consists of two presentations, the first of which is a project pitch (10%). This presentation is an “elevator pitch” of your healthcare redesign project to a potential sponsor. The aim of your presentation is to “sell” your project to a potential sponsor. The content should be short and snappy and convincingly convey the reason why your project is important and what it aims to achieve. You should also identify how your project aligns with organisational priorities. The presentation should be a narrated PowerPoint slide show and must include problem statement, brief background including healthcare redesign approach/theory/s, preliminary root cause analysis, aim and scope of the project. Feedback from this assessment will help clarify the scope and aims of your healthcare redesign project. The presentation should be 3 to 5 minutes long.

Assessment Task 4: Project plan and diagnostics schedule
Task Description:
You are required to submit a plan for your intended health service improvement project. You can use an organisational template, but we recommend the template provided in MyLO as it contains the required sections. The following must be addressed: problem statement, scope, background, project aims and goals, governance structure, project roles and responsibilities, stakeholder analysis and communication plan, risks and issues, and project timeline. In the background section you are expected to discuss which healthcare redesign approach/theory/s you will use and why and include relevant supporting data and literature as appropriate to illustrate the significance of the problem.

Your project plan will also include a diagnostics schedule. Aim to include diagnostic tools and activities that will allow you to capture the voice of the organisation, staff, and patients, (as appropriate), identify root causes, and collect all baseline data. Activities in your schedule should provide opportunities to involve stakeholders in the diagnostics phase. The schedule should be realistic and selected tools relevant to your health service problem.

Feedback from this assignment will help you to improve your project management skills, the plan for your diagnostics and strengthen the justification for your project.
