What is the Unit About?
Unit Description
This unit provides students with an introduction to management concepts, functions and strategies. The unit outlines the key functions of management. The unit then explores the context surrounding management functioning, including an analysis of the broad environment in which organisations operate, the internal dynamics of organisational life, and the ethical climate that underpins sound management. This unit will also include a strong focus on general skills and abilities associated with conducting literature research and communicating effectively in an academic setting.
Intended Learning Outcomes
As per the Assessment and Results Policy 1.3, your results will reflect your achievement against specified learning outcomes.
On completion of this unit, you will be able to:

Identify and define foundational management theories, concepts and processes
2.
Exercise judgement and recommend sustainable solutions for routine management issues.
3.
Communicate an academic argument supported by management literature.

Assessment details
Assessment Task 1: Online Tests
Task Description:
Students are required to attempt FIVE (5) online multiple-choice tests. Each test will be randomly constructed for every student. The online tests must be taken at a time of your choice during the designated week.

Students will need to log on to MyLO using their university electronic mail username and password.

Topics covered for the tests will be available on the assessments page on MyLO.

The online tests must be taken at a time of your choice during the designated week. The first test will be in Week 4. From Week 4 - see MyLO

10 multiple-choice questions per test to be completed within a 10-minute window.

Assessment Task 2: Essay Assignment
Task Description:
The purpose of this assessment task to is to develop and assess your knowledge about the sustainable management of a key managerial issue. You are expected to cite a minimum of SEVEN (7) academic journal articles in your essay.

This assessment task aligns with the UN's Sustainable Development Goal 8 (i.e., Decent Work and Economic Growth) by introducing and assessing development-oriented management concepts that support productive activities, decent job creation, entrepreneurship, creativity and innovation.

Requirements:
This assignment requires you to construct a report response to ONE (1) of the topics detailed in the Assessment Tasks>Essay Assignment folder on MyLO.

Completing the assignment:
Before you begin your essay, download, and complete the self-paced learning activity “Completing the Essay Assignment checklist” which is available in MyLO. This will ensure you have addressed the tasks you need to complete your essay.

Submitting the assignment:
You must submit an electronic copy of your MS Word or PDF files only through the Assignment submission link on MyLO.

NB: Your word limit includes everything in your assignment except for the list of references.

Submissions in any other file formats other than MS Word or PDF will not be sufficient for the purposes of on-time submission.

Assessment Task 3: Capstone Assignment
Task Description:
The purpose of this assessment task is to assess your knowledge about the sustainable management of key managerial issues.

This assessment task aligns with the UN's Sustainable Development Goal 8 (i.e., Decent Work and Economic Growth) by introducing and assessing development-oriented management concepts that support productive activities, decent job creation, entrepreneurship, creativity and innovation.

The capstone assignment comprises TWO (2) Sections:
Section A requires students to attempt FOUR (4) essay questions from a choice of seven options (for a total of 40 marks). The questions will be based on those discussed in the tutorial sessions.

Section B requires students to attempt ONE (1) essay question from a choice of two alternatives (for a total of 10 marks). The questions will be based on the readings for the ‘Management’, ‘Marketing’ and ‘Human Resource Management’ (available in the Assessment Tasks>Capstone Assignment Information folder on MyLO).

How your final result is determined
To pass this unit, you need to demonstrate your attainment of each of the Intended Learning Outcomes, achieve a final unit grade of 50% or greater, and pass any hurdle tasks.
Submission of assignments
Where practicable, assignments should be submitted to an assignment submission folder in MYLO. You must submit assignments by the due date or receive a penalty (unless an extension of time has been approved by the Unit Coordinator). Students submitting any assignment in hard copy, or because of a practicum finalisation, must attach a student cover sheet and signed declaration for the submission to be accepted for marking.

Requests for extensions
If you are unable to submit an assessment task by the due date, you should apply for an extension.
 
A request for an extension should first be discussed with your Unit Coordinator or teaching support team where possible. A request for an extension must be submitted by the assessment due date, except where you can provide evidence it was not possible to do so. Typically, an application for an extension will be supported by documentary evidence: however, where it is not possible for you to provide evidence please contact your Unit Coordinator.
 
The Unit Coordinator must notify you of the outcome of an extension request within 3 working days of receiving the request.
Late penalties
Assignments submitted after the deadline will receive a late penalty of 5% of the original available mark for each calendar day (or part day) that the assignment is late. Late submissions will not be accepted more than 10 calendar days after the due date, or after assignments have been returned to other students on a scheduled date, whichever occurs first. Further information on Late Penalties can be found on the Assessments and Results Procedure.
Review of results and appeals
You are entitled to ask for a review of the marking and grading of your assessment task if there is an irregularity in the marking standards or an error in the process for determining the outcome of an assessment.
