Unit Outline

This unit is a capstone unit bringing together a variety of skills and knowledge acquired in earlier units of the Bachelor of Information Systems (BIS) degree and provides an opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge and previous practical experience in a setting which attempts to create an environment typical of the professional world. All aspects of the systems development life cycle will be considered: problem specification, requirements extraction, system design, implementation, testing, documentation and deployment. The unit provides students with the experience of working in a team and dealing with the professional issues of teamwork, contract negotiation and management, risk minimisation; group dynamics, and presentation skills. Each student will be placed in a team of approximately four (4) people, and each team pitches a problem to be voted upon for a project to be developed. This unit is as much about the process of producing the products (the individual and team work), as it is about the quality of the products produced.

On completion of this unit, you will be able to:

If your unit is offered On campus, it is expected that you will attend all on-campus and onsite learning activities. This is to support your own learning and the development of a learning community within the unit. If you are unable to attend regularly, please discuss the situation with your course coordinator and/or our UConnect support team.

If you miss a learning activity for a legitimate reason (e.g., illness, family commitments) teaching staff will attempt to provides alternative activities (e.g., make up readings) where it is possible.

Assessment Task 1: Professional CV and Contribution to Project

TASK DESCRIPTION:

You are to produce a professional ICT curriculum vitae (CV) that describes your personal details, history of academic achievements and work experience.

Your CV needs to be arranged logically and clearly. As a minimum your CV should include the following sections:

Contact details
Academic background
Qualifications and skill sets
Work or Intern experience

The formatting of your CV should be professional and consistent.

To support the development of your CV, you are required to collect and provide evidence of your developed skills as listed in your submitted CV.

The evidence must support your contribution to your team's project over the period of the unit.

This assessment item should be added to throughout the progression of the unit as you achieve personal or project milestones.

Assessment Task 2: Project Pitch

TASK DESCRIPTION:

Your team will develop a project pitch that describes what the project is about and the reasons the project should be undertaken.

The Project Pitch should include (as a minimum):

Project background
Project deliverables and objectives
Project stakeholders
Expected benefits
Client quality expectations and acceptance criteria

This assignment item includes self/peer assessment, giving students an opportunity to critically evaluate both self and their peers’ contribution and performance in collaborative effort to meet the requirements of this task, under time pressure. The self/peer assessment component is designed to allow students to demonstrate their ability to reflect on the process and outcomes of teamwork and improve individually and collectively. The self/peer assessment component will influence each team member's result for this assessment task.

Assessment Task 3: Project Documentation

TASK DESCRIPTION:

You and your team will develop project documentation that contains all the required information ready for project handover.

The project documentation should reflect the requirements of the stakeholders in the respective market.

This assignment item includes self/peer assessment, giving students an opportunity to critically evaluate both self and their peers’ contribution and performance in collaborative effort to meet the requirements of this task, under time pressure. The self/peer assessment component is designed to allow students to demonstrate their ability to reflect on the process and outcomes of teamwork and improve individually and collectively. Assessment Task 4: The Product and Video

TASK DESCRIPTION:

Your team will create a 15-minute video presentation (file type .mp4) encompassing the process and outcomes of your work across this unit.

Your presentation will include (as a minimum):

• Details of your project;
• An explanation and demonstration of the functionality of the project, and how this meets the problem and user requirements;
• An explanation and justification of the design elements used in the project in order to provide a solution;
• A description of the tools that were used to build the product.

This assignment item includes self/peer assessment, giving students an opportunity to critically evaluate both self and their peers’ contribution and performance in collaborative effort to meet the requirements of this task, under time pressure. The self/peer assessment component is designed to allow students to demonstrate their ability to reflect on the process and outcomes of teamwork and improve individually and collectively. The self/peer assessment component will influence each team member's result for this assessment task.

TASK LENGTH:

15 minutes in duration. Peer and Self Review will occur alongside each weighted assessment task for this unit.

How your final result is determined

To pass this unit, you need to demonstrate your attainment of each of the Intended Learning Outcomes, achieve a final unit grade of 50% or greater, and pass any hurdle tasks.

Submission of assignments

Where practicable, assignments should be submitted to an assignment submission folder in MYLO. You must submit assignments by the due date or receive a penalty (unless an extension of time has been approved by the Unit Coordinator). Students submitting any assignment in hard copy, or because of a practicum finalisation, must attach a student cover sheet and signed declaration for the submission to be accepted for marking.

Requests for extensions

If you are unable to submit an assessment task by the due date, you should apply for an extension.

A request for an extension should first be discussed with your Unit Coordinator or teaching support team where possible. A request for an extension must be submitted by the assessment due date, except where you can provide evidence it was not possible to do so. Typically, an application for an extension will be supported by documentary evidence: however, where it is not possible for you to provide evidence please contact your Unit Coordinator.

The Unit Coordinator must notify you of the outcome of an extension request within 3 working days of receiving the request.

Late Penalties

Assignments submitted after the deadline will receive a late penalty of 5% of the original available mark for each calendar day (or part day) that the assignment is late. Late submissions will not be accepted more than 10 calendar days after the due date, or after assignments have been returned to other students on a scheduled date, whichever occurs first. Review of results and appeals

You are entitled to ask for a review of the marking and grading of your assessment task if there is an irregularity in the marking standards or an error in the process for determining the outcome of an assessment. Details on how to request a review of a mark for an assignment are outlined in the Review and Appeal of Academic Decisions Procedure.
