Unit Outline

The objective of the ICT Industry Placement unit is for students to experience the application of ICT in meeting business needs by integrating theoretical knowledge with the practical applications and experiences in a real environment. Students will be given the opportunity to complete business tasks, participate in work teams, comply with the norms and rules of the business, recognise personal strengths and weaknesses (particularly after feedback from a work placement supervisor), cooperate within groups, and adopt and practise professional ethics that influence workplace behaviour. Students complete placement work in a defined role during a minimum 12 day full time equivalent period with registered placement providers. In this unit, students will have the opportunity to experience areas of their chosen profession before graduation and to reflect on how their studies have prepared them for the work environment. Students will then be able to consider how they can make the best use of their remaining studies to prepare for their planned career. Whilst on placement, students will experience the corporate environment and be able to develop their communication, time management, and customer service skills in business situations with opportunities to obtain feedback from a work placement supervisor on their performance. Through this experience, students will develop a richer appreciation of the graduate capabilities required of all ICT professionals.

Assessment Task 1: Application

TASK DESCRIPTION:

A resume, cover letter, and response to the selection criteria for the position the student successfully secures with a workplace provider. Due at the beginning of the placement.

Assessment Task 2: Context Report

TASK DESCRIPTION:

A report on the workplace provider (organisation) the student is completing their placement with. The report includes a description of the provider's core business and the student's work duties and experiences (to date) whilst working there. Due mid-way through the placement.

Assessment Task 3: Reflection Report

TASK DESCRIPTION:

A personal reflection and evaluation of the work placement experience that includes work completed, achievements, challenges, lessons learnt, and the impact of the placement on the student’s current studies and future career goals. Due after the placement concludes.

Assessment Task 4: Evaluations

TASK DESCRIPTION:

Two (2) pre-formatted and scored performance evaluation suveys that include associated comments. The first evaluation contributes 10% and is due mid-way through the placement. The second evaluation contributes 20% and is due at the conclusion of the placement. In each case, the evaluation survey is also completed by the student's placement supervisor.

Assessment Task 5: Placement Output

TASK DESCRIPTION:

Each placement will require the student to work towards the placement provider's business objectives and complete the tasks assigned to them. At the conclusion of the placement, the student's placement supervisor will complete an output evaluation to assess the student's contribution and overall work output.

How your final result is determined

To pass this unit, you need to demonstrate your attainment of each of the Intended Learning Outcomes, achieve a final unit grade of 50% or greater, and pass any hurdle tasks.

Submission of assignments

Where practicable, assignments should be submitted to an assignment submission folder in MYLO. You must submit assignments by the due date or receive a penalty (unless an extension of time has been approved by the Unit Coordinator). Students submitting any assignment in hard copy, or because of a practicum finalisation, must attach a student cover sheet and signed declaration for the submission to be accepted for marking.

Requests for extensions

If you are unable to submit an assessment task by the due date, you should apply for an extension.

A request for an extension should first be discussed with your Unit Coordinator or teaching support team where possible. A request for an extension must be submitted by the assessment due date, except where you can provide evidence it was not possible to do so. Typically, an application for an extension will be supported by documentary evidence: however, where it is not possible for you to provide evidence please contact your Unit Coordinator.

The Unit Coordinator must notify you of the outcome of an extension request within 3 working days of receiving the request.

Late Penalties

Assignments submitted after the deadline will receive a late penalty of 5% of the original available mark for each calendar day (or part day) that the assignment is late. Late submissions will not be accepted more than 10 calendar days after the due date, or after assignments have been returned to other students on a scheduled date, whichever occurs first. Review of results and appeals

You are entitled to ask for a review of the marking and grading of your assessment task if there is an irregularity in the marking standards or an error in the process for determining the outcome of an assessment. Details on how to request a review of a mark for an assignment are outlined in the Review and Appeal of Academic Decisions Procedure.
